Scientists at Argonne National Laboratory are trying to build the perfect battery.
Lithium-ion batteries are the gold standard, but there is much progress to be made. For example, one improvement would be to create solid-state batteries in order to eliminate the need for the flammable electrolyte that is inside lithium-ion batteries.
Solid-state batteries also could have three times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, which might allow things like electric flight.

This big old Origin laptop came into my computer repair shop because it won't stop beeping after the customer replaced the thermal paste. This old laptop is a real chonker, and the tech packed into here was top of the line back in the day. But even after new thermal paste and fans, this pc still keeps beeping, indicating damage on the motherboard. But the amount of labor to track down the issue without schematics, will cost more than this old technology is even worth. Which is always the problem with motherboard issues in high-cost countries like the US, leading to more e-waste.
