Dario Amodei warned in an essay that AI has advanced "drastically faster" since the summer and could command a swarm capable of taking over the internet within six to 12 months.

He has proposed a three-part plan to slow things down.

Sam Altman told OpenAI staff the company is open to pacing AI development alongside other labs, though "some may not agree," per Bloomberg.

This followed AI researcher Jacob Coxon's public resignation from Anthropic, where he accused both Anthropic and his former employer OpenAI of "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," warning the people building AI believe it "could kill us all by the end of the decade" and that a rogue agent swarm could "take over the entire internet" within 6-12 months.

Anthropic's Evan Hubinger backed the warning: "We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans. I personally think it is greater than 10% within the next decade." Elon Musk initially called Coxon's post "seems like a setup."

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei escalated the debate Saturday with an essay urging the industry to "pace the frontier" and warning that swarms of rogue AI agents could "take over the internet" within six months without safeguards, while stressing this shouldn't mean "sacrificing commercial advantage or the United States' lead in AI."

Altman quickly agreed, posting "I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier," and pledged to give "independent evaluators with employee-like access"; Musk reversed course, writing "Dario is right."

While speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday, Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) spoke about the development of AI.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are agreeing on a striking message: the development of increasingly powerful AI may need to slow down. Amodei says frontier AI companies should deliberately pace improvements in model capabilities so safety measures can keep up. Altman says he agrees, and has suggested leading AI companies could be approaching an agreement on AI safety. The warnings come amid growing concern about increasingly autonomous AI agents, including cases in which agents have found ways around safeguards and accessed external systems. So are AI capabilities advancing faster than our ability to control them? Or is the deeper problem how humans are designing, training and deploying autonomous AI systems? DW speaks with AI and software security expert Gary McGraw about what the recent incidents actually tell us, and whether slowing the AI race would make it safer.

Joe Benton says he resigned from Anthropic a couple weeks ago due to his safety concerns regarding the pace of development of artificial intelligence (AI).

He spoke with LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow about he dangers the technology can pose and why he and Jacob Coxon have sounded the alarms.
