They took him out of burning Jerusalem at eighteen, an iron collar on his neck, the gold of the Temple carried ahead of him on carts. In Babylon he outlived four kings — a dream of a statue no one could tell, three friends thrown into a furnace, a hand of fire writing on a palace wall, a night in a pit of lions. And three times every day, for seventy years, he opened his window toward a city he would never see again.

The Chronicles of Daniel is a full-length biblical film about the whole life of the prophet Daniel, told in order from the night Nebuchadnezzar's army ringed Jerusalem with fire in 605 BC to the morning the exiles laid the first stone of the new Temple. It follows a young noble of Judah and his three friends — Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, renamed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego — through the court of Babylon: the king's food refused, the school of the Chaldeans, the dream of the great statue of gold, silver, bronze and iron struck down by a stone cut without hands, the golden image on the plain of Dura and the furnace heated seven times hotter, where the king saw four men walking in the fire. It stays with Nebuchadnezzar through the dream of the great tree, seven years among the oxen of the field and his last night; with Belshazzar's feast, the gold cups of the Temple and the words MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN; with the Persians turning the Euphrates and taking Babylon in one night; and with Darius the Mede, the decree of thirty days and the den of lions. It also shows the visions of Daniel's old age — the four beasts out of the sea, the ram and the goat by the river Ulai, Gabriel and the seventy weeks, and the man clothed in linen on the banks of the Tigris. It draws on Daniel 1 to 12, Jeremiah 25 and 29, Ezra 1 to 3 and 2 Chronicles 36, and stages every scene in the world it happened in: the blue-glazed gate of Ishtar, the temple tower of Etemenanki, the willows by the rivers of Babylon. If you have ever wondered how a man stays faithful for a lifetime in a land that is not his own — this is that chronicle. And when the decree of Cyrus finally sent the people home, the old man who had prayed toward Jerusalem every day of his life stood at the gate and watched them go without him.
