Sam Altman told OpenAI staff the company is open to pacing AI development alongside other labs, though "some may not agree," per Bloomberg.

This followed AI researcher Jacob Coxon's public resignation from Anthropic, where he accused both Anthropic and his former employer OpenAI of "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," warning the people building AI believe it "could kill us all by the end of the decade" and that a rogue agent swarm could "take over the entire internet" within 6-12 months.

Anthropic's Evan Hubinger backed the warning: "We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans. I personally think it is greater than 10% within the next decade." Elon Musk initially called Coxon's post "seems like a setup."

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei escalated the debate Saturday with an essay urging the industry to "pace the frontier" and warning that swarms of rogue AI agents could "take over the internet" within six months without safeguards, while stressing this shouldn't mean "sacrificing commercial advantage or the United States' lead in AI."

Altman quickly agreed, posting "I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier," and pledged to give "independent evaluators with employee-like access"; Musk reversed course, writing "Dario is right."
