The Coolest Thing I’ve Ever Seen Yet People Hate It
Tesla unveiled the second-generation Roadster on October 15 near SpaceX’s McGregor test site, and the demo was unlike any car reveal before it. The car climbed a curved ramp until it hung fully inverted, held itself there while stationary using a four-fan suction system generating up to two G of downforce, then flipped off the top on cold-gas thrusters and landed, before jumping over a Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Semi and Cybercab. Tesla displayed a 0 to 60 time of 0.81 seconds and claims under 0.59 for the top Rocket trim. The team’s reaction is close to disbelief, along with a defense of the reveal against the charge that it’s a stock pump, and a push back on the idea that none of it will ship. There is also plenty of skepticism, including that the inverted version will never be street legal, that the timelines will slip badly, and a flat prediction that people will die in one. The larger argument is that the demo matters more as a reminder of what engineering can do than as a product, and that a generation pulled toward software and finance might be pulled back toward building things.
Note: Production is targeted for 2028 with no price announced. Merger details discussed in this segment are rumor and are labeled as such on air.
