The Hidden Debt Behind the AI Boom — And What Actually Pops It

The most valuable industry on earth is funded, in large part, by borrowed money. This is the AI debt bubble — explained from the filings, not the headlines.
In one line: chipmakers, cloud providers and model labs are paying each other with money borrowed from bond buyers and pension funds, and three named tripwires are what would break that loop.
Came here asking is AI a bubble? The answer is in who is paying — and with what.
• Three mechanisms. (1) Circular financing: the Nvidia → Lambda → Anthropic loop, and Nvidia's $105bn of residual-value guarantees on an OpenAI campus in Ohio. (2) The shift from equity to debt: SPVs and long leases, ~$200bn of investment-grade issuance in H1 2026, and JPMorgan's finding that five hyperscalers plus Nvidia issued ~$320bn this year — around 68% of new long-duration US Treasury borrowing. (3) The accounting choice that flatters: chip depreciation, where Michael Burry's ~$176bn estimate is contested by Steve Eisman.
• Three tripwires, by name: rates stay high; the IPO window shuts (Firmus Technologies' repriced float); one large counterparty can't pay.
• What we do not know: whether compute demand keeps growing at this rate; whether the depreciation schedules are wrong (the answer lives in resale prices that do not exist yet); and how many non-binding deals ever become payments. We do not give you the date this pops — nobody can.
Every figure is attributed, contested ones included, and every estimate is named as its author's. Not investment advice.
