Our guest today is The Verge’s Hayden Field, and we’re discussing a question that’s been rocketing around the tech industry for the past week: Is Google losing the AI race? That's because last week, the company announced a bombshell reorganization of its AI division. You can read these moves, and Google’s reaction, in a lot of different ways. So we really wanted to sit down with Hayden to dig into some of the smartest analysis we’ve seen this past week, and what we think is really going on here. #google #ai #deepmind #technology

For our latest episode of Decoder, we sat down with Allan Thygesen, the CEO of Docusign. You know Docusign, it’s the platform that lets you sign stuff online. It turns out 7,000 people work there, which is one of those facts floating around that’s always felt like perfect Decoder bait. What are all those people doing? And what kind of product roadmap does a company like Docusign even need?
Allan has only been CEO of Docusign for three years, so he has some interesting perspective on where the company was, the changes he wanted to make, and where he thinks this is all going. Hint: it involves AI. #ai #docusign #legal #tech

The biggest story in tech right now is the spiraling debate about AI safety and regulation. The CEOs of all these companies have issued various calls to slow down development and develop regulation, including asking for antitrust exemptions so they can all coordinate on safety issues.
So to make sense of it all, I called Jonathan Kanter, the former antitrust chief for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Biden Administration. There's a lot going on, and we really got into the weeds of how all this regulation might work, and how it might interact with antitrust law, competition policy, and our relationship with China.

Our guest today is Lila Snyder, the CEO of Bose. Lila was last on the show about four years ago, and since then she’s dramatically rearchitected the company — she sold off Bose Professional, acquired the high end audio brands McIntosh Labs and Sonus faber, and, perhaps most importantly, started licensing all that core Bose technology to other companies. That big change in the business comes with a big change in structure. Becoming a software company in addition to a product company comes with a whole new set of challenges, and Lila got into how it’s all working. #bose #audio #headphones #tech

Dr. Jill Lepore is one of the best writers there is at identifying institutional patterns in history, and Decoder is a show about systems and organization — so her new book, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State, is a perfect fit for the show.
You build systems by measuring things — gathering information, quantifying it as data, and taking action on it. The book's big thesis is that this kind of systemic measurement is really a dehumanizing act, one that flattens humanity and human concerns into something, well, artificial.
These artificial structures touch everything — not just in the more obvious places like in apps or AI, but all the way up to politics, governance, and the very future of the nation-state itself.

Our guest today is Shishir Mehrotra, the CEO of Superhuman, the company formerly known as Grammarly, which is still its flagship product. Back in August, Grammarly shipped a feature called Expert Review, which allowed you to get writing suggestions from AI-cloned “experts,” and recently, reporters at The Verge and other outlets discovered that those experts included Nilay, among many others.
No one ever asked permission to use these people’s names this way, and a lot of reporters were outraged by this. To Shishir’s credit, he did not cancel our interview and he came on and stuck it out. This conversation got tense at times, and it’s clear there’s disagreement about how extractive AI feels for people. There’s a lot in this one, and we’re excited to hear what you think. #ai #superhuman #grammarly #creators #tech

Our guest today is Ryan Mac, a technology reporter at The New York Times and co-author of the excellent book Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter, which came out in 2024. We wanted to have Ryan on the show because we’re on the cusp of the SpaceX IPO, which promises to be one of the most consequential public offerings in history for a variety of reasons.
Its biggest-ever size, of course, at nearly $2 trillion dollars. But also because all kinds of rules that keep our markets fair are being bent, if not outright broken, along the way. And, also because buried somewhere inside SpaceX is X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, which Musk purchased in 2022. #elonmusk #spacex #xai #ai #tech

Our guest today is Hayden Field, senior AI reporter for The Verge. Often when Hayden comes on the show, it’s because something has gone wrong in the world of AI. Last weekend, that something was a pretty intense mix of Anthropic, the Trump administration, and Anthropic’s new AI model, Fable 5.
Hayden actually just published a fantastic play-by-play on The Verge about how the Fable ban went down, and the scramble through the weekend from both sides to figure out what exactly happened and how it might get resolved. So we wanted her to come on and just walk us through the timeline and what it all means. #tech #ai #anthropic #claude

Today, I’m talking with Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI. As you’re no doubt aware, the biggest story in tech right now is the spiraling debate about AI safety and regulation. So I really wanted to talk to Mustafa about what he thinks is real and not in AI safety, whether the concept of alignment itself is up to the task, and whether this industry needs to slow down before it kills us all. #microsoft #ai #aisafety #regulation #anthropic

Today I’m talking with Josh Dzieza, a longtime features writer here at The Verge, about a massive data center in Utah that does not exist, might never exist, and yet has already completely reshaped the politics of the entire state. Josh just published a major feature this week on the struggling Stratos data center project in Utah backed by ‘Shark Tank’ star Kevin O’Leary. So I invited Josh on the show to discuss what’s happening inside the AI industry’s infrastructure boom, inside the bipartisan backlash to data centers, and how the tech industry is running into the one obstacle it can’t seem to spend its way out of: local democracy. #ai #datacenters #tech

My guest today is longtime friend of the show Joanna Stern. You all know Joanna: she is the former senior personal technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal, a former Decoder guest host, one of my co-founders at The Verge, and also just one of my very closest friends.
Joanna just left that lofty perch at the Journal to start her own media company called New Things, and she’s starting with her new book about AI called I Am Not a Robot, which is out this week on May 12th. So we had Joanna on to talk about all of that, especially what she learned going all in on automation.

Adam Conover is a familiar face to anyone who’s spent time on the internet. He got his start at CollegeHumor back in the day, before transitioning into cable TV with Adam Ruins Everything, then onto Netflix, and all the way back to YouTube again, where he posts videos and hosts a podcast. That is exactly the kind of career path that fascinates me, and it also happens to touch on basically every major Decoder theme there is.

Our guest today is Hank Green, a longtime friend of Decoder and the co-founder and now former owner of Complexly, an online education company he started with his brother John in 2012. We say former owner because Hank and John have just converted Complexly into a nonprofit and given up their ownership of the company in the process.
That’s some of the purest Decoder bait that ever was, because it’s absolutely all about organization and decisions and how you choose to make that kind of big, structural change to a company. So of course we had to bring Hank back on to talk about it. #youtube #hankgreen #education #tech #ai

It’s a big week for Meta. The company has its big Connect conference, and the new Muse AI agent appears to be an early hit. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been doing a lot of interviews about it all — so of course we asked for him to be on Decoder. Meta declined, for whatever reason. But luckily Mark just did a big interview with our friend and former colleague Alex Heath on the Sources podcast. So I figured we could highlight some moments from that conversation to point out some obvious gaps in what Mark is saying about Meta and hopefully inspire the next set of people who talk to him with some follow-up questions. #ai #meta #muse #technology

My guest today is Mike Cannon-Brookes, who is co-founder and CEO of Atlassian. Atlassian is one of those companies that every other company runs on — it makes important platform tools like Jira and Trello. This means Atlassian is also right in the middle of the way AI is changing how all these companies work. Or, if you buy the idea of the so-called Sasspocalpyse, AI might just build all of these tools for you, destroying this entire category of businesses. Obviously, Mike had a lot of thoughts pushing back on this narrative, so we spent time really digging in and talking through what AI is doing to enterprise software. #ai #atlassian #software #technology

Andrew Warner and Tashfeen Ahmed reveal how to get free LLM access for AI coding, agents, image generation, video, audio, and more using Free LLM API.
Andrew sits down with Tashfeen Ahmed, creator of Free LLM API, to show how developers can access free token quotas from multiple AI providers through a single unified API. Tashfeen demonstrates how the platform automatically routes requests across providers, supports automatic failover, and lets users prioritize reliability, speed, or intelligence when choosing models. They walk through the setup process on Mac, Windows, Docker, iOS, and Android, showing how to connect the unified API key to coding agents like Claude Code and OpenCode and start experimenting without paying for tokens.
They also explain why free LLM access is particularly useful for prototyping and experimentation, while cautioning against relying on provider free quotas in production applications when the provider doesn't permit it. Tashfeen shows how Free LLM API uses Thompson Sampling to continuously evaluate models and route requests, and how the platform supports more than just text models, including embeddings, image, video, audio, and multi-model Fusion. The episode is a practical look at stretching free AI access further while experimenting with different models and providers.

What if your AI could actually use your computer for you?
In this episode of The Next New Thing, Andrew Warner talks with Evan Nison, who built tools that let AI agents control your browser, send messages, and complete real tasks across your desktop—all from the terminal.
Evan demos how his Browser Bridge and Desktop Bridge connect tools like Claude Code to real-world actions: filling out forms, navigating websites, sending iMessages, and even testing front-end code automatically. Instead of guessing from code or screenshots, the AI can now see, click, and fix things on its own.
They also break down how this fits into a broader shift toward MCP servers and agent workflows—where APIs, automation tools like Zapier, and direct computer control all work together.
The bigger idea: AI isn’t just generating outputs anymore—it’s becoming an operator, capable of executing real work across your entire system.

Today, I’m talking with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is the world’s best-sourced Apple reporter. It was also the debut of the foldable iPhone Duo. So I wanted Mark on the show to explain why this event was so important, and how John Ternus’ Apple will look a lot different from Tim Cook’s. #apple #iphone #iphoneduo #siri #ai

Bloomberg Pursuits reporter Sarah Rappaport tells Bloomberg This Weekend that luxury travelers are increasingly seeking tiny hotels with as few as one to six rooms, combining the privacy of a villa with personalized high-end hotel service. Speaking with hosts David Gura and Christina Ruffini, Rappaport says the trend is spreading across Europe and the US as travelers seek exclusivity, fewer crowds and unusual experiences in restaurants, museums and historic properties.

This week, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett says AI’s productivity boost may be much larger than official economic data currently indicate. And, AI companies are largely in agreement that the technology needs guardrails, but the ethical implications of AI could also create new opportunities for liberal arts education. Plus, America is rebuilding a critical minerals supply chain after decades of Chinese dominance. Later, America’s shrinking college-age population is forcing universities to compete for fewer students.

New GitHub repos are changing how AI actually works—memory, voice, agents, and even full replacements for paid tools.
In this episode of The Next New Thing, Andrew Warner breaks down the most important repos of the week with Adam Brakhane—and what they mean for builders.
They cover tools that convert messy data into clean formats for LLMs, give Claude persistent memory, add voice to any workflow for free, and package entire agent stacks into a single subscription. Some are early. Some are rough. But each one points to a bigger shift in how AI systems are being built.

Andrew Warner and Michael Galpert take an inside look at Muse, Meta’s new AI agent with its own computer, and explore what it can actually do across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, web browsing, and everyday workflows.
Andrew sits down with Michael Galpert, an early OpenClaw user, to test Muse and see how far its agent capabilities go. Michael demonstrates how Muse can access Instagram data, export information into an Excel file, visualize relationships between followers, manage messages, and work with Meta’s ecosystem in ways that other AI agents often cannot. They explore Muse’s human-in-the-loop approval system, persistent memory, identity and personality settings, side chats, connectors, and its ability to communicate through channels like WhatsApp. Muse can also operate a cloud computer, open a browser, research products, and let users take control when needed.
The conversation also explores where Muse shines—and where it still falls short. Michael explains why the agent is particularly useful for people working with Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Ads, and Instagram, while Andrew and Michael test its ability to connect tools that don't have a built-in integration. They discuss Tailscale access to other computers, security and anti-spam protections, limitations with websites like Costco, and the difference between having one persistent agent versus multiple specialized agents. They also explore Muse’s personalized feeds and Ideas tab, which can suggest useful automations based on what the agent knows about you. After using Muse for several days, Michael shares why he sees it as a serious contender for how people may interact with AI agents in the future.

Andrew Warner sits down with Zapier co-founder and CEO Wade Foster to show how Next Gen Zaps can make AI agents more reliable, reduce unnecessary token costs, and prevent agents from making expensive or unexpected mistakes.
Andrew shares two real-world examples of the problem: spending $264 in just two days because an AI agent repeatedly checked websites, and an agent that replaced his own video thumbnails in sponsor emails with thumbnails from other creators because it decided they would perform better. Wade explains how Next Gen Zaps solve this by combining deterministic automation with agentic decision-making, so agents can handle the parts that require judgment while predictable actions are “hardened” to run the same way every time.
Wade demonstrates the approach using a Granola-to-Google Drive workflow. The system checks for new meeting transcripts, uses AI to determine whether a transcript contains sensitive topics that should not be automatically shared, and then deterministically saves approved transcripts to Google Drive. He also walks through a fantasy football workflow that researches rosters, waiver wires, injuries, and trade opportunities, uses AI for the managerial decisions, and then sends Wade a consistent weekly report.
The episode breaks down exactly where AI should be probabilistic and creative—and where it should be deterministic, predictable, and locked down. Wade also explains how agentically managed workflows can recover from errors automatically, giving you the flexibility of AI without making every step dependent on an agent.

Andrew Warner and Robbie Abed break down the 10 most-installed AI skills from GitHub, including skills that help agents find other skills, improve software design, browse the web, follow engineering best practices, and become better tutors.
Andrew and Robbie start with Find Skills, a Vercel skill that works like an app store for AI skills, helping agents discover and install the right capabilities for a task. They then explore Matt Pocock’s Grill Me and Grilling skills, which push AI to ask better questions and stress-test ideas before work begins. Anthropic’s Frontend Design skill is next, helping agents create more distinctive interfaces instead of falling into the familiar “AI-generated” design patterns. They also look at Vercel’s Agent Browser, which gives agents headless control of a web browser, and Matt Pocock’s setup skill for bringing engineering workflows and best practices into a repository.
The list also includes Vercel’s React Best Practices skill, which helps agents follow performance recommendations for React and Next.js, Lark Doc for interacting with ByteDance’s workplace platform, and Matt Pocock’s Teach skill, which turns an AI agent into a persistent tutor that builds lessons over time and remembers what you've already learned. Finally, they explore Vercel’s Web Design Guidelines, covering accessibility, forms, typography, animation, and other practical web standards. Throughout the episode, Andrew and Robbie show what these skills actually do, how they work together, and why packaging repeatable workflows into skills can make AI agents more capable.

Andrew Warner and Henry Ndubuaku show how Needle brings small, private AI models directly into software and devices.
Andrew Warner talks with Henry Ndubuaku about Needle, Cactus Compute’s tiny on-device LLM built for reliable automation without requiring an internet connection or external API calls. Henry demonstrates how Needle turns natural-language requests into structured tool calls, powers software features and hardware like robot vacuums, and uses tightly scoped actions and confidence scores to reduce mistakes. They also compare Needle with Jev and explain why running an 8–29 MB model locally can matter for privacy, cost, and bringing AI into smaller devices.
